What are common law trademark rights?

Common law rights attach from the day you use it. If you are the first person to use a particular word, symbol, or slogan as your brand, as your trademark for a particular type of product or service, if you’re the first person in the country to use it, then you get what are called common law rights, but they’re very narrow rights. They end at your doorstep on the first day and they expand slowly based on your advertising budget over time. Whereas, a federally registered brand again, is effective in all 50 states, territories, and possessions of the United States once it’s registered.
