Is a patent necessary for commercial success?

Absolutely not. Look at McDonald’s. There’s no patent on a hamburger, and they could care less, but they are protecting themselves three other ways that every business has. I say if you’re in business, you have intellectual property. You may or may not have a patent, but McDonald’s has trademarks, McDonald’s golden arches, just lovin’ it. They have copyrights on their ads, and they have secrets, what makes their fries so good. So yes, you can make money in the business world without a patent.
